Fomapan 400 @ 1600 Fomapan 400 @ 1600 This roll of Fomapan 400 was exposed EI1600 and developed at a +2 stop push. Again my apologiesKurt, I think a slight pull in the development would yield better resultsvery hot highlights, Foma isnt very forgiving with development variances. So by exposing for the shadows, youre basically over exposing it 2-3 stops and thus placing the shadows off the toe and onto the linear part of the film curve? While Fomapan is still about the least expensive 120 film you can get, its price advantage over arguably better films has eroded since I initially wrote this review. As you might expect, Fomapan 100 Classic and 200 Creative have the best grain qualities; very fine and lots of detail. Id guess the image on the right is Fomapan and vice versa. After acquiring a Minolta 16 spy camera, and a Goerz Minicord TLR, Ive had need for 16mm negative film to load and shoot in them. Not being concerned with grain and underexposure, I didnt mind it. document.getElementById("ak_js_1").setAttribute("value",(new Date()).getTime()); This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Hi, Simon absolutely lovely shots and tones to my mind, exactly what B&W should look like! Glad you liked it!The one on the left is the Foma! While we're discussing the Foma/Arista 400, yes it does seem grainy. notfalls kann man es in 1+100 mit einer Standentwicklung versuchen. Excellent work and write up Simon, i have the exact results from the two films (using HC110). I cant find a reputable source to this, and theres nothing mentioned in Fomas technical sheets, so Im really not sure what to think about this. Especially if Im working at a reenacting event. The contrast of a Fomapan 400 is going very high at higher iso rates. The Pen EE has not arrived yet.. That way, you're a mile away and you've got their shoes.". If you want some quality on iso 1600 with a iso 400 film use the HP5+ or films like delta 3200 or Tmax 3200 on iso 1600. Recently I switched over to DD-X from ID-11. Hopefully this will be apparent when you look at the images below, which you can click on to get a closer look. There are some real good fotos inside. And to those who want to shoot it at ASA-400 or even faster, I say go for it! And while it does perform better and is a little more accessible to more people, I still think that the film does an amazing job as a 400-speed film. Excuse the scanner artefacts looking directly at the negatives, there is perhaps a very small difference in the darker areas of the sky, but this is marginal, so marginal in fact that I am not really sure you can call a winner. Thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts on Fomapan 400 @ 200. I Out of all the films I tested, I felt Tri-X had the best balance of contrast overall. It may not display this or other websites correctly. A couple of years ago, I spent the summer shooting different B&W films. As I mentioned earlier, the film performs the best when over-exposed by a stop or a little less than a stop, but that shouldnt stop you from shooting it as the box speed of ASA-400. DD-X is already to go. Unless you really zoom in on the scans I think that the Nikon lenses I shot these images on delivered excellent results, and the film drew that sharpness without adding too much character. 1. Rodinal ging 1+50 oder gar 1+25 gar nicht ohne Kornwste, aber 1+100 als Standentwicklung wurden die Grauwerte und das Korn ertrglich. The experiment started by shooting a roll of Kentmere 400 and a roll of Fomapan 400. I think the example shots in this article demonstrate this well. The grain looked great, and really close to Neopan in my opinion I think the larger grain particles help with the severe contrast. Bringt der APX 400 tatschlich 640 ASA bei Rodinal? One word of caution when scanning Kentmere films with flatbed scanners like the Epson V600 or V800 - be very careful with the Unsharp Mask. I am interested in contrast in less than optimal conditions, and the detail were able to pull out of specifically the darker areas of the image. Its a traditional grain and very contrasty. It works well in Rollei Low-Speed, Adox FX-39 II, Kodak D-96, Adox Atomal 49, etc. The contrast, larger grain, and character is the best Ive found at this price point. However, dependable old Tri-X 400 at 320 works for me, especially in 120 size. Although these werent excessively bad I think Ill be sticking to other films for my standard low light/push options especially HP5. Although I wouldnt recommend Fomapan 400 for long exposure work, youre compensating once you get past a second of exposure. You are using an out of date browser. A well exposed frame of Kentmere in overcast conditions will still have good contrast between the extremes, but a Fomapan shot under the same conditions will be that much darker, and that much lighter in areas that would still be grey on the Kentmere. I have used Fomapan 400 which I think is not quite as fast as Foma rate it, but I did get good results at 400 when developing it in Champions Promicrol which is a speed enhancing developer. Corrected a couple of typos in the original piece. Because Fomapan is a classic, old-school type of emulsion, its performance in 135 format is what youd more or less expect when shot in the much smaller frame size of 35mm film, which in a word, a bit grainy. Very little shadow detail, but great when you know how to use it. Nice and useful informations. The Minolta Maxxum 9 The Perfect Professional 35mm SLR? However I really wanted to get better negatives. I do keep a bottle of Rodinal on hand for slower films (Ferrania P30 or Across 100) but DD-X is my go-to for everything else. I guess that having used it for so long is also a factor, but I have a lot of confidence in Kentmere 400. Quote; totally agree with the article. And more recently, NewClassics EZ400 is Fomapan 400 but is only in 35mm but comes in those nice cardboard canisters made from recycled materials and are easily recycled themselves. 5x7 Fomapan 200 at e.i. Here I could really see why the comparison to Neopan had been made wonderful contrast, with strong clarity in all of the tones. If youve enjoyed my photographs here I have a larger selection available onmy Instagram, from all different kinds of films and projects. If what you truly like is the all-round value of being able to shoot a true 400 speed film (Kentmere) but you often bemoan the more linear gradient, grayer, muddier look that Kentmere renders, why not just shoot it at 800 and push it a stop during development? Wie ist der Fomapan qualitativ einzuordnen und wie wirkt er in Rodinal? I want to try the films out myself now. It is a bit of a marmite film that gives some very different results depending on the use case. 1. Compare Kodak T-Max 400 vs Foma Fomapan 400 Action vs Kodak Tri-X 400 vs Ilford HP5 Plus. Some great shots here, but the man smoking in the bus is just terrific. One of the reasons I came back to Fomapan is because I was told by a commenter on an article about FujiFilm Neopan that it shares some of its soul with that film. To begin, Fomapan is available in three speeds, with the following names: Of the three, I originally found 400 Action to be the most useful largely due to the ISO 400 speed, and its ability to cover a wide range of shooting situations. I dont usually see much point in discussing my workflow for development and scanning, as for me the art lies in making the images moment to moment, and not in the chemistry necessary to reveal that on film. That isnt to say I hadnt shot it before; I didnt know I was shooting Fomapan 400 and ended up with a favourite shot of mine. Display as a link instead, In my day to day London walks I have been shooting a lot of Kentmere, and as a walk-around film it is wonderful, and really accentuates the greyer London tones. As a truer native 400 speed film it is more practical for someone looking to get the best results at a higher speed. But honestly, Fomapan 400 Action is nearly indistinguishable from the two slower speeds in terms of grain, contrast, and image quality. My experiences with both of these films has been through sharp lenses Leica, Zeiss, Nikon, some of the most reputable lenses for sharpness every produced. It performs surprisingly well in that tiny little format. Die etwas strkere Krnung nehme ich gerne in Kauf. The Kentmere almost never dips into pure white, whereas the Fomapan does so very frequently. I shoot both of them. Vor Korn habe ich keine Angst, solange kein 80 Schleifpapier Look entsteht. Die wild unverpackten Recycle Filme mchte ich ebenso wenig benutzen. Some have noted that the foma offering doesnt perform well at box speed, whereas there seems to be a fair amount of confidence in the Kentmere film working at 400. Honestly, if money is that big an object or is the sole criteria, then just steal TMY2 or TriX. So which is the better film? Great shots, Simon!Like the Fomapan better in this sample, but obviously its a matter of tase. Ive seen Fomapan described as having a tabular grain structure, the same as found in Delta, T-Max, and Neopan lines of film, as well as C41. At $8.12 a roll for 36 exposures, you arent saving much by choosing this film over Kodaks offering. With some loaders there is no actual gate, just a labyrinth which prevents the light from entering more than an inch or so. I dont think I have as direct an analogy with Fomapan 400, its more of its own thing. Fomapan is a film I tried when I first started out, but I was undertaking the learning curve of a film camera as well as film itself, and this meant that my results were not ideal. Everything is personal preference, just den habe ich in D76 zu recht brauchbaren All photos were given the same amount of sharpening and then inverted after cleaning up any lingering dust with the spot healing tool. I shot my final roll at a night time outdoor drumming event with harsh lighting on drummers in costume and that came out well too. Ive found that when scanning, especially if youre using something like an Epson V600, it can be very difficult to recover highlights from Tri-X without throwing off the whole image. This really seems to centre around people getting very variable results in different developers, the sense that youll get excessive grain (especially in Rodinol), and that the film doesnt shoot well at box speed. A lovely aesthetic, but definitely one to be controlled rather than allowed to get out of hand. Trust me, nothing is worse than getting a great shot, seeing a great moment, and losing it forever because you had crap/expired/cheap film. Definitely worth the effort but definitely to save for the summer! An update here. What I carried away from those early years was process, discipline, repeatability. You cannot paste images directly. Except that if things go wrong then the monetary loss is greater with the more expensive film. Ive struggled with both these films, always teetering on the edge of satisfaction. Easy to introduce texture in those areas in a print just by flashing the paper beforehand, if that is something that perticularly worried anyone who doesnt want any areas of pure white on their image. It provides a grittier look than other Kodak films (specifically T-Max 400). 2. At $8.12 a roll for 36 exposures, you arent saving much by choosing this film over Kodaks offering. Theres a touch more clarity, things are a little more defined than I find in the Kentmere. Thank you! You can post now and register later. Also, I will not be doing anything I consider to be "my work." However the overall effect is actually quite muddy, and unpleasing to my eye, whereas the Fomapan in the same condition is undeniably less detailed, but results in a nicer image (in my opinion).if(typeof ez_ad_units!='undefined'){ez_ad_units.push([[336,280],'35mmc_com-box-4','ezslot_11',182,'0','0'])};__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-35mmc_com-box-4-0'); Kentmere 400, exposed for the dappled light. aber eigentlich wird das nix. Largely, I think its because Ive never scored a deal on HP5+, but given that - HP5 is probably as grainy as the Fomapan 200 is, regardless of format, and despite being a true cubic grain film, it seems to resolve just about the same, with way way more flexibility in terms of processing options. My conclusion is that in comparison between two box speed 400 films the Kentmere wins outright. I tried Foma 400 and to be honest, I am not happy with it. Since that time Ive come a long way with my film development techniques, the capability of my scanning equipment, the digital workflow I use to scan negatives, and my overall knowledge of photography. Ive shot Tri-X before, but my preference is HP5+! These days, I primarily shoot 100 Classic, in large part because I use Fomapan a great deal in the testing of vintage cameras Ive repaired or restored, and their limited shutter speeds and apertures make it difficult to properly expose on a bright, sunny day with fast ISO 400 film. It has more highlight bleed and halation than Kentmere, but this is rarely overwhelming in the way it may be on something like Cinestill 800t. As registered member you'd see an image here. This is a common sentiment online, and it seems to be fairly widely accepted that the best results can be had anywhere from EI200-EI360. Shadow detail is close to non-existent in these situations, but I am usually happier with the look of these images. I loaded up my LowePro 400 AW II with my Nikon F100, 12-24mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.8, and 85mm f/1.8 one foggy March morning before striking out through the streets of NYC to shoot some film. Its siblings include Fomapan 100 and Fomapan 200, plus a Retropan 320 film that was introduced just a few years ago. Lastly, I converted the file to 16-bit Grayscale and added a curves layer to set the white/black points in Photoshop. Yep, there are many reviews of Foma 400 on the net, and they often say that, shot at box speed and developed as recommended, its grainy, contrasty and lacks shadow detail, which is what pushed film looks like.I shoot a lot of it, all at 200. Ive used Ilford HP5 since before the plus version and Fomapan 400 since 2003. Right out of the gate, I cant trust it. "Never criticize someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes. I absolutely understand that for someone looking for a lower grain and more of a modern look the Fomapan emulsion isnt going to work, but then, I am not really sure that the Kentmere 400 would meet this requirement either neither of these films wins in that department. These days Im only really developing my own film when I have certain requirements, like push processing, otherwise I wait until I have a large batch to send off to AG in Birmingham. Fomapan features a more severe cut off, with well exposed images showing pure blacks and pure whites with only a very same-y grey in the middle. The detail of well exposed for highlights on Fomapan is less refined, and sometimes seem a little harsh even when Im certain they were correctly exposed for. Kentmere seems to be accurately rated at 400, and Ive never been inclined to shoot it over/under, or even to push or pull it. I take my results at 400 and, more often than not, am happy with them.
